...for the Android Lollipop update. But why Sony would ditch the branded app – could it be to simplify what the app does to new users? Could it be to tie into the rebranding to "PlayStation Music", which will replace Music Unlimited at the end of this month? Could it be to disassociate some of Sony's assets in a looming break-up of the Sony Mobile business?
I guess this is another nail in the coffin of this legendary name. For those of us who actually had Walkman devices, it's especially sad.
I guess I will keep buying Walkman MP4 players, for the sake of nostalgia.

My wife used to have one of these. It was awesome.

I had one too, and a Walkman CD player, trying to put that in any pocket was a nightmare.

Since phones are gigantic now I love music players like this. Clips to my belt and get 36gb of storage (32gb mem card 4gb internal) for like Ł30.

Sony makes Walkman MP4 players, but you have to pay more for the badge and the added quality it brings.
I wonder if I convince more people to buy those, we can keep Walkman alive.

That's kinda disappointing, even though I use Rocket PLayer instead of the Walkman app.
Where did you see this? I'm still wondering when Lollipop will come to my Z3.

Here , Sony says the update will arrive soon.

It's hard to make a case for mp4 players these days with smartphones being so common. Smaller clip mp3s make sense for running etc. Mp4s still take up pocket space. They could help reduce battery drain on phones though.
I used to have a Samsung Q2 which was pretty good but ultimately fairly pointless so I sold it.

They make clippers too.
But why clip it when you can wear it?
Remote control ring, waterproofing and NFC/Bluetooth connection to take calls and listen to music stored on your phone. And there is a version that acts like a personal trainer who lives in your ear.
One way or another, the Walkman must survive.

They just introduced another walkman at CES this year, man.

That's the sort of stuff that is best for them I would imagine. I know most people into fitness have some kind of specialised music player for it, but I haven't seen an mp4 player other than an ipod touch in years.

Yes, but that will most likely fail because I doubt that many people will want to pay $1200 for a music player. Even for a very good one.

That's like saying you think Ferrari will fail because you doubt many people will want to buy a $300,000 car, even for a very good one. It's a high-end, low-volume product designed specifically for enthusiasts. It's not supposed to sell in high volumes.

That's why you wore that bright yellow box on your belt so you could look like a badass.

Problem is, the audiophiles will buy something less mainstream and already proven to cater to their needs.

I'd argue it's not geared for enthusiasts, especially since after discussing the product with enthusiasts I discovered there was an equivalent product out there (not running on Android though) which matched it in every single way (playable file types and storage capacity and battery life) and surpassed it in others. Namely the FiiO X5 High Resolution Lossless Music Player ($349.00) .
I'm not saying your comment is invalid, I'm just saying for something geared towards enthusiasts it's priced far higher than products recommended and preferred by enthusiasts, which puts it at a severe disadvantage.

disassociate some of Sony's assets
Such a sibilant sentence!
